Choose the Stainless Steel Grade
SS304 Welded Chain
SS304 welded chain specifications are commonly considered for general industrial, outdoor and non-chloride environments. Final suitability depends on moisture, temperature, chemical exposure, maintenance and the complete assembly.
SS316 Welded Chain
SS316 welded chain specifications may be reviewed for coastal, saltwater or chloride-exposed environments. The grade does not make a chain corrosion-proof, and the real service conditions must be evaluated.

Measure the Wire Diameter
Wire diameter is the diameter of the solid round bar used to form each link. Use a suitable caliper and measure several representative links. Do not confuse wire diameter with the outside width of the chain link.
For replacement projects, a worn or deformed chain should not be copied from one measurement point. Record several readings and identify whether the submitted values represent nominal dimensions, actual sample dimensions or required production limits. State the tolerance separately.
Confirm the Link Dimensions
Complete stainless steel welded chain dimensions normally include wire diameter, inside link length, inside link width, outside dimensions, pitch and link geometry. Wire diameter alone cannot confirm equipment compatibility.

If the chain must match a windlass, sprocket or other calibrated equipment, provide the equipment model and all required link dimensions. A chain-dimension reference normally checks diameter, pitch and inside width together rather than diameter alone.
Short Link, Long Link and Calibrated Chain
Short Link
Short-link geometry has a more compact internal length. Selection should be based on the required drawing, standard and assembly rather than appearance alone.
Long Link
Long-link geometry provides a larger internal opening. Confirm the intended connection method, installation space and dimensional requirements.
Calibrated Chain
Calibrated chain requires controlled geometry for compatible equipment. The relevant standard, dimensions and equipment requirements must be confirmed.
Custom Link Geometry
Non-standard link dimensions can be reviewed from drawings or samples. Manufacturability and inspection criteria are confirmed before production.
DIN 763, DIN 766 and Customer Drawings
DIN 763 stainless steel chain is commonly associated with long-link geometry, while DIN 766 stainless steel chain is commonly associated with short-link calibrated dimensions. A standard name by itself is not enough to confirm compliance.
Provide the applicable edition, dimensional table, material grade, tolerances, inspection method and acceptance criteria. NACM or other requirements should be treated the same way. For a drawing-based order, the approved drawing becomes the primary technical reference after both parties confirm it.
Specify the Total Length and Quantity
State whether the required length is per piece, cut length, coil, reel, assembly or number of links. Include the length tolerance, end configuration and whether joining is permitted. Quantity units should be unambiguous: metres, pieces, coils or complete assemblies.
For bulk enquiries, also provide the preferred length per package, package-weight limits and receiving method. These details affect production planning, identification and packaging.
Application and Working Environment
Describe whether the chain will be used indoors or outdoors, in freshwater or saltwater, near chlorides, at elevated or low temperatures, near chemicals, or in a moving assembly. Also state whether the chain is used for static securing, general connection or equipment compatibility.

The achievable surface condition depends on material, link geometry, welding, processing route and acceptance criteria. Avoid relying on general terms such as “mirror finish” without a reference sample or measurable requirement.
Testing and Quality Documents
Possible requirements include material documentation, dimensional inspection, visual weld inspection, finished-length verification, specified proof or tensile testing, corrosion testing and third-party inspection. Not every document or test applies to every chain.
State the standard, test method, sampling plan and acceptance criteria before quotation. Document availability and testing arrangements must be confirmed for the individual order.
Packaging Requirements for Bulk Orders
Packaging may be reviewed as cut lengths, coils, reels, bundles, cartons or pallets according to chain size, quantity and transport conditions. State label format, shipping marks, package-weight limits, destination and any receiving restrictions.
